What better day than halloween to think about the deviling of foods. You know – deviled eggs, deviled ham, devils food cake, even devil dogs! It seems that deviling of foods was historically assoiated with highly seasoned or spicy foods. Straight Dope does a good job of giving historical perspective on it..

Here are a few examples of how they did some deviling back in the day.

From an innovation perspective, deviling is a great springboard to develop new recipes. How can we think differently about deviling? Could we devil ice cream? Could we devil cheese? It goes on and on. What if we went opposite – how would we make these recipes angelic? Using deviling as inspiration we can make a variety of new connections that have never been made before and that is how great new innovations are started.

Happy Halloween!
