Kitchen utensils: we talk about them a lot. In fact, we talk about them more than just a lot because having a functioning kitchen is the foundation of being able to successfully cook and create new recipes and meals at home. In fact, we’d go as far as to say that without the right kitchen utensils, even the best laid recipe plans can run amok. So while you don’t need to spend a small fortune stocking up on random kitchen gadgets, it does help significantly to have a few basics on hand.

Creating a Kitchen Utensil List

We’ve already covered bizarre kitchen gadgets and utensils and whether or not they’re worth the cost; the five baking utensils you should always have in your kitchen; and what you should buy if you’re stocking your first kitchen. Today, we’re going to stay in the same vein, but we’re going to focus entirely on what you should include in your kitchen utensil list when you’re getting ready to purchase your first set of kitchen utensils, or upgrading and replacing your current utensils.

Take Stock of What You Already Have

Even if you’re just starting out, chances are you already have a few basic utensils lying around or that were handed down to you. This is a good opportunity to go through what you currently have in the way of kitchen utensils and figure out what you can use and what needs to be purchased or replaced. Take note: while this list is very generalized, your individual utensil needs will depend largely on the type and quality of cookware you have. This is because many types of pots and pans (like nonstick skillets) can be damaged with metal cooking utensils. In this case, you’d need to invest in some high-quality plastic spatulas and spoons that can handle heat well.

In an ideal world, and one where you had all of the space in the world to store your kitchen utensils, here’s what should be included on your Ultimate Kitchen Utensil List:

  1. Spatula  – (we also recommend getting a silicone or heavy-duty plastic spatula – like this one – if you have cookware that scratches easily)
  2. Slotted Spatula
  3. Spatula Spoon
  4. Rubber Spatula (for scraping bowls) – *Make sure whatever you choose is designed to handle high heat.
  5. Serving Spoons
  6. Pasta Spoon
  7. Wooden Spoons (in 3-4 varying sizes)
  8. Whisk
  9. Potato Masher
  10. Basting Brush
  11. Sauce Ladle
  12. Soup Ladle
  13. Pair of Tongs
  14. Kitchen Shears
  15. Grater (make sure to go for quality, since this will be used frequently for prep)
  16. Can Opener
  17. Measuring Cups (You can usually find a set that comes with measuring spoons too)
  18. Measuring Spoons
  19. Chef’s Knife (or for a more expensive version, opt for something like this)
  20. Paring Knife
  21. Bread Knife (these should be long and serrated)
  22. Meat Thermometer
  23. Corkscrew
  24. Colander
  25. Wire Mesh Strainer
  26. Cutting Boards (purchase a few in different materials – ie plastic and wooden)
