If you’re like most people, food packaging is probably one of those things that you don’t really ever think about until you see something really unique. Whether it’s something a bit avant garde like the edible packaging we talked about a few weeks back or something a little more mundane, like the square-ish gallons of milk that they sell in Costco (the shape makes shipping more affordable and efficient).

But true innovative food packaging doesn’t just look pretty on a shelf. It uses materials that are better for the environment, it considers how consumers use their products and makes the experience easier and more intuitive, and it finds ways to reduce waste and create more efficient ways of shipping and stocking products.

Here are 6 products that are using incredibly innovative food packaging.

1. Friss Egg Carton

Finding a way to pack, ship, and store eggs is no easy feat. You have to think about temperature, and consider the fragility of eggs – use the wrong type of packaging and you’ve not only got a mess, but you’re losing money on unusable products. The Friss egg carton was specifically designed to find a way to protect eggs in the shipping and storage process, while cutting down on unnecessary materials. What they came up with is pretty genius. Eggs are protected by thick cardboard that essentially wraps around each egg, keeping it in place. And when the consumer is ready to use one, the top portion of the carton flips back for easy retrieval.

2. Instant Noodles Accordion Package

This Cup of Noodle concept is smart because it takes into consideration the fact that the contents of the cup are much more compact before they’re cooked. Because of this, they used an accordion design that stays compact before cooked. This makes shipping cheaper because more products can be packed together more efficiently. It also helps cut waste due to needing less boxes for packaging. And, it’s great for consumers who don’t have a ton of cabinet space. Once you’re ready to cook the noodles, you just pull the cup up higher, add water, and go.

3. Dissolvable Food Packets

From the company that brought you dissolvable detergent pods comes the same concept – just substitute detergent with food and drink. These packages contain powdered hot chocolate mix, oatmeal, and all types of other foods cooked with water. Throw a package in a bowl or cup, add hot water, and watch the packaging disappear.

4. Stack Wines

Stack Wines is a company that makes pre-packaged glasses of wine that are ready to drink. Maybe not the most practical solution if you’re drinking wine at home with dinner, but for occasions where you’re not at home or in a restaurant, stackable pre-packaged wine glasses make a lot of sense. For example, if you’re having a picnic with friends or you’re throwing an event at an event space, these glasses are easier to transport, less likely to break, and don’t require a corkscrew to open.

5. Popcorn in a Bowl

On the whole, popcorn might not seem like a product that needs more design innovation. It packages almost flat on the shelf, and then expands when you cook it. But there is one step that can stand to be optimized, and that’s the eating popcorn process. Leaving it in the bag isn’t a great option, since the heat from inside can burn you, and it’s messy. This solution, however, uses a creative design concept that transforms the packaging and heating container into a bowl. It’s just an added bonus that the bowl is trendy and origami-inspired.

6. Coffee Creamer + Spoon

Anyone that’s ever stopped into a convenient store or gas station for a quick cup of coffee knows that a lot of waste is created in the process. There are separate packages for sugar, creamer, and coffee stirs. This smartly designed product takes creamer and a stir mechanism and melds them together with a spoon that comes packaged with a serving of creamer inside the handle. Just pop open the end of the handle, squeeze the creamer out, and use the spoon to stir. Once you’re done, just throw it away.
