Sometimes you just need something quick and easy, and thus turn to frozen meats and seafood to whip up a quick meal. In all honesty, frozen shrimp isn’t a bad thing to keep around. Because they’re individually flash frozen, they defrost quickly and can last for ages in the freezer. They’re also a great way to spice up a basic pasta or to toss into a salad.

How to Cook Frozen Shrimp

To start, you’ll need to thaw your shrimp. If you purchased them already frozen, take them out of the package and add them to a colander. Run cool water over the frozen shrimp for 5-7 minutes to completely thaw them out. Make sure that you rotate the colander to make sure that each shrimp spends time under the running water.

While the shrimp is thawing out, get a skillet ready on the stovetop. Drizzle a little olive oil in the pan and heat to medium high. Once the oil is hot, toss in the thawed out shrimp. Sprinkle with a little salt and pepper and a squeeze of lemon. The shrimp should only take 3-4 minutes to cook completely, but you can always tell whether or not it’s done by the way it looks. Uncooked shrimp will be translucent with a gray-ish tail. As it cooks, it will turn white and the tail will turn a pink color. Once the shrimp is completely cooked, you can toss it into a salad or on top of a plate of pasta.

Shrimp also pairs incredibly well with rice.  Add some vegetables and fry up cooked rice, along with an egg and shrimp, to create a delicious and simple shrimp stir fry dish. Or toss it into a soup. The sky is really the limit here when it comes to cooking with frozen shrimp.
