Well, it’s not flying cars or jet packs, but there is one sign that we’re moving into the future: hologram advertising is becoming an actual thing. Believe it or not, companies like Kraft are testing out hologram advertising in supermarkets as a hi-tech way to grab consumers attention, and we have to admit: it’s pretty cool.

“What’s a hologram?”, you may be thinking. A hologram is a 3D image that’s projected into the air to create images. They were popularized in the Star Wars films, where they become synonymous with futuristic technology. Add that to hologram pop star concerts showcased in anime films and other sci-fi themed hologram use, and you’ve got the perfect recipe for creating a cult following.

As someone who grew up with Star Wars, I love the idea of hologram advertising in common areas like grocery stores. Surprisingly though, this is not the advertising industry’s first foray into hologram advertising. Nike used them in 2013 to display hologram shoes around Amsterdam. And since then, brands have been looking at interesting ways to incorporate holograms into daily experiences. And that includes supermarkets.

Mondelez, a snacks company that makes Chips Ahoy cookies, Cadbury eggs, and other sweets, has rolled out a hologram advertising campaign in select Food Lions, K-Marts, and Price Chopper markets around the U.S. This is the first supermarket focused hologram advertising that we’ve heard about, so it’s pretty interesting and it will be fun to see how consumers react to hologram technology right in the middle of their food aisle.
